Abstract:

The OGC Sensor Observation Service (SOS) standard is used in many application domains to support the interoperable sharing of observation data. At the same time, observation data sets are becoming increasingly important the context of the European INSPIRE directive and further reporting obligations. To improve the support of observation data as a new type of geospatial data in the INSPIRE context, the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, the French Geological Survey (BRGM) and 52°North have teamed up. The result of this cooperation is a set of enhancements to the two INSPIRE technical reference documents: the “Observations & Measurements & SWE Guidelines” and the “Technical Guidance for Download Services” to support the provision of observation data through the SOS interface. This conceptual approach has been complemented with an open source implementation as extension of the 52°North SOS. As a result the 52°North SOS can be used as INSPIRE download service and is able to serve data which validates against INSPIRE schemas. Within this workshop, the participants will receive on the one hand an in-depth introduction to the technical documents content and on the other hand practical experiences with the corresponding SOS implementations. Especially the installation of the SOS and its configuration will be trained with some sample datasets. Different strategies for installation will be explained and demonstrated. Finally, the workshop will offer participants guidance and help on developing their own strategies, how the presented SOS implementation can be integrated into their own observation data systems.
